A couple of nights ago we watched (well, attempted to watch) Walk the Line with Joaquin Phoenix & Reese Witherspoon. A favorite of mine and need I repeat ... Joaquin Phoenix!
It was near perfect ... the kids were in bed, we had just settled in for the second half of the movie when the power went out. No apparent reason ... just gone, complete blackness and the screams of our not quite to sleep yet kids bellowing down the hall.
As husband tries to find the flashlight, I attempt to find my cell phone, yellow pages and light a candle all while telling the kids to calm down ... well okay ~ yelling from the kitchen. Proof once again, women are better at multi-tasking.
20 minutes later the power company has been called, the kids are back in bed and husband has declared he can't use the bathroom until the power is on because "it's pitch black in there!"
Call it a moment of inspiration based on the nights movie choice or just a desperate plea not to have to clean pee off the floor; I decided to come to husbands rescue.
Armed with a handful of tea lights and my trusty lighter I headed to the bathroom. Yup ... you guessed it ... the ring of fire was born! I exited the bathroom with a big grin and mentioned "I lit some candles for you." Moments later one could hear the subtle hum of Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash.

Love is a burning thing
and it makes a firery ring
bound by wild desire
I fell in to a ring of fire...
I fell in to a burning ring of fire
I went down,down,down
and the flames went higher.
And it burns,burns,burns
the ring of fire
the ring of fire.
The taste of love is sweet
when hearts like our's meet
I fell for you like a child
oh, but the fire went wild..
I fell in to a burning ring of fire....
HILARIOUS! I've added you to my blogroll, too.
By the way, can I just say I LOVE LOVE LOVE your avatar "Mom on Strike"?
Thanks for the compliment. I am on strike anytime I blog ~ which by the way is as much as I can get away with!
The literal ring of fire is quit good, my sister's husband loves that song ... I'll have that idea to her.
P.S. I'll be added you to my blog roll today. Reading you is time well spent. Thanks for the laugh.
LOVE IT! by the way that is our theme song...playing when we first fell in love. Now I see a whole new meaning, LOL!
Men are amazed by the power of a candle. Kevin used to say, "Wow, it really gets light in here if you light enough candles!" Duh. We didn't always have electricity.
LOL! We've had to use the "facilities" and even shower by candlelight in power outages before - always makes me wish that we had a window in the bathroom and wonder what life must've been like back in the "Little House on the Prairie" days, too!
We keep camping lanterns (the battery powered kind) upstairs in our bedroom and downstairs in easily accessible places for power outage situations, just in case. See, we're such well-prepared parents... Unfortunately, our kiddo loves to play with the camping lanterns, so the odds of their batteries not being used up and dead in the event of an actual outage? Slim to none. Oh well, we tried! (I also keep a box of matches on the top shelf of the bookcase in our room and plenty of candles, just in case just in case.)
Congrats on being the SITSta of the day!
Cheers!
Very funny! Congrats on being the SITS feature! :)
lol! how cute! when life gives you lemons . . . :)
That was hilarious! Happy SITS day!
Wonderful idea. See he needs to bow down to you now.
Happy SITS Day!!
Thats great. I hope that he didn't do anything to make the flames get higher. ;)
That is really funny that your husband wouldn't just get a flashlight and rest it on the floor or sink or commode so that he could go pee pee in the dark...Alas, mama to the rescue building a ring of fire...soo soo funny...
HA! SOmetimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. :)
Funny! Great use of candles too.
Absolutely wonderful! Isn't it great when you can be sweet with that ever so subtle hint of sarcasm! You are great.
When I saw the title I have to admit I got a little scared. My friend calls the point during delivery when the head is right "there" ready to come out the "ring of fire" because of how it feels. I was pleasantly surprised by your post. I'm taking a sigh of relief right now.
Hilarious!
almost like a Ceremonial Pee! Love it!!!!!
Too great! I love that your hubby "couldn't" use the bathroom...hysterical!
Cute!! Congrats on being featured today!
Poor fella, I can't do it either unless I'm more than half asleep. LOL About the ring of fire. :) funny.
Awesome. I'll be singing that song all day long.
That's so funny. I love that you made a ring of fire for your hubby and how that tied in to the movie you were watching.
BUT, I'm laughing most at the fact your hubby couldn't use the bathroom because it was too dark. hehe
This was so funny! Of course when it is US who needs protection from the darkness, it's our husbands that are chicken!! :)
Great post!
This is too funny. I can hear the music playing in the background.
I love that movie and I love Joaquin Phoenix! But most of all, I love how much more we as women are just smarter than the other half.
Oh too funny!
Congrats on your SITS day!
Now that is getting creative! And yeah, Joaquin Phoenix...say no more!
So funny. We, women, are so capable.
That is funny and sweet!!
You paint quite the picture! Good stuff, you've got me laughing here!
I love johnny Cash! Hope you are enjoying your sits day. I'm a regular reader...
Could have sworn I commented on this when you posted this originally! I love Walk The Line, one of my favorite movies!!
Did he love his Ring of Fire so much that he now demands to only use the facilities in this manner? Because that's something my husband would do...
That's awesome! My husband would've died if I did that!
*congrats on SITS feature!
LOL ... that post is so funny.
Further reinforces my belief, that women don't just have x children. Most have x plus 1.
LOL!!! Oh how I would have loved to be a fly on that wall.
(and they laugh at our tea light purchasing...)
This is great!! I probably would have been the one to tell my husband that he couldn't use the bathroom... I would have been too worried about the pee to have my wits about me enough to light candles..
I'm not sure they could have cast that roll any better. Joaquin is precious. You are a better wife than I. When God was knitting me He didn't add any extra nurturing. Can I borrow some of yours. My husband would probably love it!
Haha! I always make sure I have my flashlight with me when it's stormy, just in case!
OMG! You are brilliant! And, I love me some Phoenix too (It can be Juaquin or his bro, River -- albeit he's dead, but still oh so cute!)
Men would return to a fetal position and shrival if it weren't for women!
WHAT would men do without us?!?! Seriously, women rock!
Just have to say that some of our best family times were during power outtages. It's kind of nice to "just be" with your family....doing low tech things like talking or playing board games.
Hmmmm, a tune that's also appropriate when one's hemorrhoids are acting up.
I thought the same as Caroline and thought it was going to be a completely different subject!
Oh and one other thing... Put the candles in front of the mirror and it becomes twice as bright... That's what I did with my flashlight last night after our power went out during a thunderstorm.
Yet another episode where a woman saves the day ... or night, as the case may be!
OMG! How funny!
how cute!! congrats on your SITS day!
Women are by far the better multi-taskers! Always equipped to handle an emergency!
That's so funny. I like that movie too--and the fact that Joaquin is in it didn't hurt one bit!
Hah! I plan to send this to my husband -- he would truly appreciate your humor, too!
Women really are so wonderfully resourceful and multi-taskable compared to our husbands. Good job making the bathroom a safe place for usage.
Oh that's hilarious, and very clever! Does he know you posted about his need for light to relieve himself? Men are very visual creatures...
Very funny! For the sake of not chancing a "miss" to clean up, I would have definately found the candles for the husband too!
You know this applies the morning after a very hot curry too?
Did you really??? Ha!
How cute is that?
Don't you love how chaos ensues because the power goes out??? My 4yo daughter wrote a song that says " I'm all alone when the power went out." Too funny!!
That is too cute, I love it!
Happy SITS day!
That is hilarious....MEN! Congrats on being SITS gal of the day.
Funny...in more than one way...!
Sheer cleverness..the Ring of Fire!
Is it BLARNEY or is it the whole truth?
How I dread those power outages and they mess up everything?
Sorry about your night enjoying Walking the Line with Joaquin had you walking around aimlessly in the dark. Be ready with all the provisions next time right by the TV so you can enjoy!
Love that beautiful header photo...did you take the photo?
Awesome! Delightful! Good choice of song!!! Unbelieveable!Bless you!
I love it! Brilliant! I'm guessing that none of the candles were accidentally extinguished?
Oh that is SO funny. Thanks for the giggle!
That is so hilarious! I love it!
I'm lovin it. I actually watched that movie this weekend, so I could totally see where that one was going, but funny all the same.
That cracked me up...I can just picture it!
Happy SITS day!
my husband hums and sings in the bathroom too
Ha ha! Now that song will be stuck in my head for two days. When life gives you lemons, make a ring of fire...
Hahaha! That's great! I love that movie. It definitely makes my top ten. The candles were GENIUS!
Love it! I also love your Mom On Strike thingy!
this is not what I expected... i thought it was going to be about that other ring of fire... the one you push through during child birth... i think i like this one better
too funny!
